Streamline is a game streaming site to better engage your friends through what you're watching and playing.

SOLUTION

How could streaming sites give viewers the content they enjoy and socially engage viewers with their friends?

Streamline combines the viewing experience with an activities feed so streamers can easily join their friends' videos and events.

Excessive Content

most content on the home page is irrelevant to viewers

Work or Friends?

viewers often have to decide whether to spend their off-time watching their friends stream or doing work

Viewing Only

viewers have low confidence to stream their own gameplay

01 DISCOVER

Streamline is built on 8 screened user interviews with those who watch live streams weekly. Through our screener survey, we found out that live stream viewers were more excited to talk about their game streaming experience, so we pivoted our focus on designing a game streaming platform.

WHO?

From our interviews with 8 game stream viewers, we discovered that:

  • 6/8    users primarily want to watch streamers they like on the streaming sites they use (Twitch)

  • 7/8    users expressed that they have interest in a variety of games and enjoy watching new/popular ones

  • 7/8    users told us that they watch live streams with the best and most entertaining content

  • 7/8    users expressed enjoyment in the connections made through the streaming experience but used external platforms (Discord) for:

                Connecting with friends

                Connecting with streamers

Connecting with strangers in live chat

  • 5/8    users watch friends' streams while they multi-task or do work. They minimize the viewport or mute it, so friends get one more view without the video distracting them from their productivity.

From these interviews, we consolidated our users' characteristics into Richie Diaz, our stream viewer persona:

I would never show my IRL friends what I'm playing."

“Live streaming is a great way for people to put themselves out there to build a community based around your values and personality.”

When my friends tell me to watch their video, I'd put it in the corner in mute so I can work and 'watch'."

02 DEFINE

Problem Statement

When gamers encounter a new or popular game, they visit streaming sites to view, share, and interact with other gamers.

Richie is overwhelmed by the amount of viewing options and features on streaming sites. How might we help Richie efficiently discover content that is interesting and relevant?

03 DEVELOP

Phase 1 - UX

We translated our users’ wishes into functional features and mapped them according to effort and impact. In the first phase, we focused our lean features on making the site curate the video contents gamers want to see.

Prototyping Process

TESTING

For our 3 rounds of usability testing with gamers, we asked 4 users to complete two tasks on our site:

Scenario

One night after getting back from work, you played an endless loop of losing rounds of Fortnite with your friends. Persistent, you decided to look for expert streamers' gameplay to boost your group's skills.

Task 1

Find a video for Fortnite that will improve your gameplay.

Score: 4/4 users were successful throughout the entire prototype legacy

Task 2

Share the video with your Fortnite gaming friends.

Score: 4/4 users were successful only after mid-fidelity because of the difficulty of finding the right icon to represent different social circles.

With the help from developers, we made a React environment for Streamline! I was chosen as the scrum master for this 1.5 week collaboration. Together, we revised our features according to feasibility and time constraint, and we refined a system to coordinate design updates and schedules.

Revisions:

  1. Activity page adjustments:

    • Newsfeed of what friends are watching (option to share), so you can join them!

    • Invitations for friends to watch videos

    • Events from the game world

  2. Color scheme adjustments for colorblind friendliness -  luckily we had a team member who was colorblind and could point to us what needed to change

  3. Cut down features that were high effort and low impact:

    • Audio messaging

    • Explore page

FOR OUR DEVS

FUTURE

For next steps, we'd like to dive deeper in to the psychology of sharing gameplay. Many gamers we interviewed raved about streamers as if they were unreachable stars.
We would like to give our viewers the confidence to share their fun times with friends no matter how "noobie" they may seem!

The social aspect of e-sports also deserves its own case study of how players like to interact differently from conventional social media UI.
